Unfortunately on the 1st of November, wholly's admin, scifi, decided to delink his server from SwiftIRC.

This was allegedly due to a disagreement between staff members.

We're sorry to see you go scifi, and wish you all the best for the future.

Our cgi-irc client has been moved to a different server, and you should no longer experience any problems using it.

Please note that if you have been pointing at our CGI-IRC client with your own login form, then you will need now need to POST to

Chimera and US hub gone

Posted by Sephiroth on 2006-10-19 11:47:31 UTC

Unfortunately, it appears that one of our providers has decided to no longer offer us services.

Because of this, we have lost the leaf server "Chimera" as well as our US hub.

Thanks to our redundant hub configuration, all US servers apart from one (that did not yet properly use this configuration) reconnected to our European hub shortly after the usual hub disappeared.

While this does not provide ideal routing, at least the network is intact. We apologize for any disruption or inconvenience caused.

We suspect that our resource consumption may be the main factor in the provider's decision, and so will aim to enter agreements with more solidly enforced resource availability and limits in the future.

We believe that our CGI-IRC client may be responsible for disrupting more important server activities during peak times.

At the time of this writing, the client is up and available for use, however it may be disabled if the problems get worse. We will also be looking into mitigating the issue or moving the client to another server.

On a side note, some areas of the site have been updated, and news comments have been re-enabled. granted test link

Posted by Sephiroth on 2006-10-13 20:24:45 UTC has been granted a test link. This server is located in The Netherlands and can currently hold 2000 users.

Best of luck to talon's admin, Marius, during the test link.

Recent downtime

Posted by Sephiroth on 2006-09-25 23:26:10 UTC

Unfortunately between 24/9/06 and 25/9/06, one of SwiftIRC's core servers experienced around 24 hours of downtime.

This initially left all network servers running stand-alone. However, the network staff were able to work around the downed server to restablish the network.

The server in question also housed our network nickname and channel services, however during the outage we were able to run a temporary version of these services from a different location, using databases backed up two days prior.

This means that any changes that you may have made between 14:00 on the 24th, and 13:00 on the 25th will no longer be in effect.

We apologize for any inconvenience that this issue has caused, and hope to implement measures that will mitigate any similar issues that occur in the future. fully linked || geo-aware DNS

wholly's test link period has ended, and the SwiftIRC administration have voted for it to become permanently linked to the network.

Congratulations to wholly's admin, scifi.

On a side note, SwiftIRC now has experimental geo-aware DNS.

Connecting to will get you on one of our US servers if you are located in North America, or one of our European servers if you are located in Europe.

If you do not reside within either of these two locations, you will be connected to a random server as usual.

Note: All AOL users will be treated as being located in the United States. This is a limitation of the software we are using.

Edit: is now also geo-aware. You can still access the original round-robin at

The server has been granted a 30 day test link by the SwiftIRC administrators.

The server is up and running and linked to the network. Congratulations to wholly's admin, scifi, we wish you all the best during your test link.

Call for servers

Posted by Sephiroth on 2006-06-20 18:52:40 UTC

As SwiftIRC continues to grow, it becomes harder for the staff to find additional network capacity.

As you've no doubt noticed, it can be somewhat difficult to connect to SwiftIRC during peak times. Now, in the summer, this problem is worse than ever.

Therefore, SwiftIRC is desperately seeking suitable volunteers to link a server to the network. If this interests you, please be aware of the following guidelines:

The server must be running a *nix operating system.

You should be an experienced IRC server administrator

The server's connection must be business grade (no consumer connections!)

Ideally, the server should be in a location not already covered by current SwiftIRC servers

You must be a nice person :-)

For the full list of guidelines as well as link to the application form, please visit the linking page

If you are unable to fill out a link application (i.e. you are unable to login to the usercp) please send an e-mail containing your details to SwiftIRC admin contact

Help operators chosen

Posted by Sephiroth on 2006-05-14 16:07:56 UTC

After processing over 130 applications, the SwiftIRC staff have chosen the first batch of new help operators.

We would like to thank everyone that applied.

While it is still possible to submit an application, it is unlikely that any more users will be accepted as help operators for a while.

The following people were accepted:

If you are on this list, but have not yet received your status in #irchelp, please contact an IRC administrator or e-mail .
